The Phaistos Disc: A History of Decipherment and an Analysis of Methodological Approaches

The Phaistos Disc remains one of the most renowned and, at the same time, methodologically most challenging monuments of the Aegean Bronze Age. Despite a long history of research, none of the proposed decipherments has gained general acceptance. The aim of this paper is to analyze the principal approaches to the study and interpretation of the Phaistos Disc, as well as to identify the reasons why its decipherment remains an unsolved problem. The paper examines the history of the artifact's discovery, the archaeological context of the find, the issues of dating, the features of the sign stamping technique, and the epigraphic structure of the text. The main groups of decipherment hypotheses are systematized: Minoan, comparative-linguistic, ritual, calendrical-astronomical, statistical, and computational. The possibilities and limitations of quantitative methods are analyzed separately, including frequency analysis, positional distribution of signs, bigram models, entropy estimates, and computational approaches to ancient writing systems. This article is intended as the first part of a study, establishing a methodological foundation for the further search for a structural invariant of the Phaistos Disc.
